Patterns and Practicalities (Revised Edition) is a series of four books. These books follow the 2010 Secondary Education Curriculum for Mathematics implementation by the Department of Education. This edition of Patterns and Practicalities retains the well-liked design and approach of the original series, but has been revised to achieve the following:

  • Follows the scope and sequence of topics in the 2010 mathematics curriculum;
  • Includes more activities, worksheets for fun, web links, quizbee items, and performance tasks and rubrics to give students better appreciation and understanding of the content; and
  • Provides the teachers more guidance in teaching mathematics within the framework of Understanding by Design (UbD).

Author: Ms. Gladys C. Nivera, Ph.D.

  • Full Professor in mathematics at the Philippine Normal University (PNU)
  • She obtained her Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from De La Salle University and BS in Mathematics for Teachers from PNU, both as a Department of Science and Technology (DOST) scholar. She holds an MA in English Language Teaching from PNU
  • Mathematics PROBE Fellow in Queensland University of Technology in Australia, she was immersed in teaching mathematics in basic education using the concrete-to-abstract approach and learner-centered paradigms
  • Presidential appointee as the Mathematics Teachers Representative in the Teacher Education Council, 2007 up to the present
  • Taught at all levels, from elementary grades to graduate school
  • Presents papers in various national and international conferences, trains mathematics teachers in various levels, and writes books, modules, and other supplementary materials
Year 3

  • Obtained her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Master of Science in Math Education at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM).
  • She earned her PhD in Science Education major in Mathematics at De La Salle University through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-SEI) scholarship.
  • She is a fulltime faculty at the Philippine Normal University Manila under the Department of Mathematic, College of Science where she handles undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • She is involved in curriculum innovation, research advising, writing books and modules in math education.

Author: Ms. Minie Rose C. Lapinid, Ph.D.

  • Assistant Professor at De La Salle University Manila
  • Obtained her Ph.D. in Science Education Major in Mathematics degree from the same institution, her MA in Mathematics Teaching from the Ateneo de Manila University and BS in Mathematics major in Computer Science from the University of Santo Tomas
  • Taught in all high school levels at Grace Christian High School
  • Presents papers in national and international conferences and has been actively involved in training mathematics teachers in various levels
